Continuing Education Support
Therapists pursing additional degrees and certifications - including first Master’s degrees and clinical certificates of advanced study – are eligible for tuition reimbursement and vouchers for course credits at selected degree granting institutions. MGH OTs in post-professional programs at the MGH Institute of Health Professions may also apply for the Burr Scholarship, which is awarded annually. Attendance of professional seminars and meetings is financially supported by the hospital and the department.
Support for Specialist Certification
MGH believes in and values specialist certification. Our therapists’ professional certifications include A-1, AMPS, NDT, Sensory Integration, Lymphedema, and Hand Therapy. Ninety-eight percent of our Outpatient Occupational Therapists are certified Hand Therapists.
Clinical Instructor Development
In keeping with our mission to educate future academic and practice leaders, we offer our staff numerous opportunities to develop their skills as clinical instructors. Occupational Therapists are trained in accordance with AOTA standards of student evaluation. On average, eight Occupational Therapy students per year complete their clinical affiliations at MGH.
Clinical Recognition Program
The Clinical Recognition Program provides a framework for recognizing advancement in a clinician’s level of clinical expertise. It defines four levels of clinical practice (Entry-Level Clinician, Clinician, Advanced Clinician and Clinical Scholar) and a process by which a clinician can be recognized for achieving the next level of proficiency. For more detailed information about the Clinical Recognition Program, click here.
Professional Association Involvement
Our therapists are encouraged to be active participants in their professional associations at the regional, state and national level. Three quarters of MGH Occupational Therapists belong to the AOTA, MAOT or ASHT.
Lecture Opportunities
From in-house and local events to national and state conferences, MGH therapists are strongly encouraged to highlight and share their expertise through lectures and presentations. As part of their professional development, our therapists are guided and mentored to grow as presenters.
Community Outreach and Volunteer Activities
Our therapists reach out to our surrounding communities in numerous ways, including community health fairs and seminars, high school and university career mentor programs, and more.
Opportunities for Research
Therapists have opportunities for participation in clinical studies.
Service on Interdisciplinary Committees
Opportunities exist within Patient Care Services and beyond, with groups focused on goals such as patient education, quality and safety, performance improvement, diversity, ethics and the MGH “Save the Earth” program.
